SMEX MO Kickoff Meeting Questions and Answers

Q1: Is a software test bed required for a Mission of Opportunity?
A1: Yes.
Q2: Is the Project Plan dated September 2007 still valid? How should I use it.
A1: Changes to the plan were discussed at the kickoff meeting. This presentation is available via the MoO Phase A Kickoff page and is the first presentation titled "Welcome"
Q3: The current SMEX Project Plan in the library reflects a combined PDR and CDR. Is that a requirement? Can they propose a combined PDR CDR as the documentation says?
A3: As presented in the GSFC presentation at the Phase A Kickoff meeting, the combined PDR/CDR concept was not approved and you have been directed at the kickoff to include a separate PDR and CDR for your phase A study. This was discussed on page 7 of the GSFC presentation which is the first presentation on the kickoff agenda.
Q4: What is GSFC's involvement if any in the interface between the Mission of Opportunity and the spacecraft or Launch Vehicle?
A4: GSFC generally does not have any involvement. The PI negotiates the resources and interfaces with the Host mission.
Q5: What is the launch date for the MO?
A5: For the Partner Mission of Opportunity which applies to GOLD, the requirements are in section 6.2 of the AO below.
" The proposing PI must provide evidence that the sponsoring organization intends to fund the primary host mission and that the commitment by NASA for U.S. participation is required by the sponsoring organization by December 31, 2012. The launch date itself is not constrained. If a commitment from NASA is not needed by the sponsoring organization by December 31, 2012, then the proposal must be submitted to a subsequent Explorer Program AO."
